Route through the forests

There are routes through the Forests around Gummersbach in all directions where pipes run underground. Trees have been cut down and there are lines just running up hills completely devoid of trees.

This park isn't particularly well signposted or labelled on a map, but it is just behind the Rathaus (Townhall). It has a zipline and a couple of table tennis tables, as well as some benches and a childrens play area. There is also a statue referencing the company Steinmueller. The company used to be a large employer of people in Gummersbach and the surrounding areas. It was operating in Gummersbach for 125 years. The statue says that it was closed as a result of banks and politicians, and sarcastically says "No work, no value - Thank you". Steinmueller used to make some parts of steam engines in Gummersbach. After the company was closed, the Gummersbach government offered the Fachhochschule Koeln a competitve rate for the land for building a new campus in Gummersbach, using the land from the factory. The only remaining building from Steinmueller is "Halle 32", which has been converted into a restaurant. The area is still called "Steinmuellergelande", and now has other businesses running there.

Bismarckplatz, Gummersbach

For some reason, many Germany cities seem to have a square called "Bismarckplatz", and Gummersbach is no different. There used to be a Chinese restaurant with a buffet at the top of the stairs which closed down in 2016. Here are some photos of the square. It is generally empty, but once a week there is a market here. Quite a few of the shops in the surrounding buildings have been closing recently also, as business is moving towards the newly built shopping center.
